Because I never learned to be happy with myself, I looked for happiness in everything around me. I was a compulsive gambler and was gambling close to $10,000 per month, I was stealing from and lying to the people I loved most in the world, acting out just to get attention (I guess I thought even negative attention was better than NO attention), and hating myself more and more each day. My behavior got so out of control that I was sent to in-patient treatment for my addiction. In treatment I discovered that a major driving force behind my decline into becoming a full blown addict was low self esteem. I have been in recovery for over 12 years now, and have found the happiness that I had always been seeking. My life is fabulous today - more than I had ever dreamed it could be! I work from home doing what I love, I have great friends, I have been in a healthy, loving, relationship with a wonderful man for years now, and I wake up each day feeling good about life, ready to take on new challenges and opportunities, and most importantly, feeling good about myself.
What I discovered in my own recovery is that while there are many options out there for improving your self esteem, not all of them address the WHOLE issue. Sure affirmations can be helpful, but they won't "cure" the problem if you don't also address the underlying cause of WHY you feel and act the way you do. Looking at when you first developed your low self esteem can also help, but not if you don't learn how to deal with your current thought patterns and change the way you view yourself NOW. Countless other methods out there can help to mask the symptoms of low self esteem, but none of them on their own really fixes the underlying issues. So here's what I've done.
